JANUARY 25TH DEVOTIONAL

January 25, 2016

I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the Lord. Psalm 31:6

When I was little, one of many thoughts my mother said to me was simply “Do not hate someone or something, simply dislike it.” I have tried to remember it especially when it comes to food. There are certain ones I have a strong dislike for but I strive to being a little boy again as well as staying away from them.

Within today’s Scripture, the Psalmist mentions “hate.” I do agree with him in a way but I feel the Lord would be happier if we simply stated we do not like worthless idols. These idols can be a love of prestige, money or even property. We may like to possess these items but the feeling should be of contentment and not one of dislike or hate.

Think of the alternative. Is there anyone or even anything you can trust more than God Himself? Think of what He did for us! Besides this, what does He do for us that others can’t even “come up to snuff”? Who else can you talk to at anytime? Where else can you find words that sink into your mind? It is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Reflect back for a moment to the Middle Ages, the lords held a higher position than the nobles. Today, it would be a better world if MANY looked up to the ONLY Lord there is rather than a leader with conflicting beliefs. As baseball fans, we enjoy the result in our favor when a relief pitcher has saved the game from being lost. However, there’s a better Savior out there and reflect on what He has done and is doing for us and SHOULD BE for the ENTIRE world.

Start today, think of how you can love someone and not hate them. It would be a lot better living. While the Lord may dislike some of your actions, He does not hate you but simply disapprove what was done. Remember other words from the Psalmist, “I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.” (Psalm 52:8b)

Prayer: May we, o’ Lord, not hate words or anything  but help us to remember to trust The ONE who has given all of us everything. In His wonderful name, Amen.
