FEBRUARY 16TH DEVOTIONAL

February 16, 2016

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

John 8:12

While reading my devotions or writing one such as this, my computer is playing music from Pandora. This site has made me a listener of excellent religious music, especially from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A recent CD of theirs has several enjoyable selections, one I use as an introduction to my testimony. Another is the title for these pieces of music. It is simply “Let Me Walk In The Light.” What actually is light and how is it seen in the Bible?

The light, as noted in our verse, is God Himself. It is He who shows us the way. Without Him, there is definitely darkness and blind spots. In an earlier chapter, John records “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” This, according to one interpreter, is that the light God provides will never be extinguished by the darkness of the world. When we follow the Lord, by His commandments and in other ways, we avoid walking in darkness, better known as sin. If He shows you the way, by light, it would be very difficult to stumble.

“Jesus Christ is the true light; He helps us see our way to God and shows us how to walk along that way. But Christ has chosen to reflect His light through His followers to an unbelieving world, perhaps because unbelievers are not able to bear the full blazing glory of His light firsthand. The word witness indicates our role as reflectors of Christ’s light. We are never to present ourselves as the light to others, but are always to point them to Christ, the light.”

God’s presence within us has brought light to others. He is the guide to our lives and thus we should never have to fall. If we don’t demonstrate that this light is in us, how can others find the light; God, and even more, how will they discover the best way to live?

Prayer: Help me to “be a beacon of truth” and not shut off “The Light” from others. Amen.
