Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5 and 6

These verses were my dad’s favorite. Unfortunately, I do have a regret in knowing this fact. I wish he had trusted the Lord more than he actually did. If he had, his life and others would have been different. Let’s look at individuals within the Bible and how it was seen in their lives.

At times, I believe to trust means to possess a degree of patience. One Biblical character who experienced this was Rachel. She wanted a baby so much that she had to trust God for the right time. In the 30th chapter of Genesis, “God remembered Rachel” and she became pregnant. It must have been difficult because nothing was happening yet I don’t believe she thought God had forgotten her while patience was present and the Lord acted favorably.

The ancient Israelites were scared as they realized Pharaoh’s army was after them. They cried to the Lord and asked Moses, “Why did you make us leave Egypt?” It was this situation where the people needed to have confidence in God and eventually they were relieved of their fears. However, they did not learn their lesson from this experience.

Paul, in Romans, informs us to trust in another way. Placing our confidence in God, according to him, meant knowing our sins would be forgiven and all would be satisfactory in a relationship with Him. He also noted that trust meant “hoping for something God would do for us in the future.”

One commentator, in summarizing his thoughts on trust, could not have stated it any better. “Two words describe trust: sure and certain. These two qualities need a secure beginning and end point. The beginning point of trust is believing in God’s character-He is who He says. The end point is believing in God’s promises-He will do what He says.”

Prayer: Enable us; Lord, to follow words given to Jairus: “Don’t be afraid. Just trust Me.” Amen.
